By Louann Brizendine MD

There is also a “female brain” book. I can’t say I love how these books depict people – like we have no control over our physical / hormonal selves – but they do a great job telling us what those hormones are and what they’re up to.

Perfect Desiccated Liver from Grassfed Cattle

Liver is THE paleo superfood.. full of B vitamins, iron, manganese, vitamin A, D, and K2. K2 is super hard to get in the diet… as is A… but liver’s got it!

Real grass-fed liver of course is best… if you can’t do it, this grass fed capsule is an excellent second place.

Natural Calm Magnesium Powder, Raspberry Lemon, 16 oz

Magneisum is very hard to get in a paleo diet (really only in grains) and is CRUCIAL for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. You need it to prevent headaches, relax your muscles, calm anxiety, prevent depression, and fall asleep at night, among so many other things. At one point it nearly saved my life.

Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil Butter Oil Blend – 120 capsules

The supplement to beat all supplements that EVERY paleo author recommends.. this is the ONLY form of fish oil I believe is healthy to take… and is rich in vitamins A and D. Great for more conditions than I can count… including PCOS, obesity, Alzheimer’s, all autoimmune diseases, skin conditions, osteoporosis, heart disease, and more.

Cardiovascular Research Mg Taurate, 180 Capsules

Of all the forms of magnesium, this one is my favorite. It has the most potent effect on calming down my heart. I like to break the capsule open in my mouth – it has a very fast and good effect.

Doctor’s Best High Absorption Magnesium Glycinate, 240 Tablets

This is the form of magnesium that is easiest on th gut. Other forms in high doses can cause intestinal motility to speed up enough to cause diarrhea. This one is the best for avoiding that if you have a sensitive stomach.

PRO-15: #1 Recommended Best Probiotic Supplement: 15 Strains

Priobitics are one of the best ways to help heal your gut… and gut healing is the best way to heal your body (and mind!). Taking a diverse probiotic with lots of cultures in it like this one helps your body build a robust flora population.

Nutrigold Vitamin D3 in Organic Olive Oil, GMO, Soy, Preservative Free

Taking D3 keeps me cold-free all year long (literally, I got terrible colds until I started taking it), and keeps me from being depressed and anxious in winter months. If you don’t take cod liver oil, and even if you do but need more D, this is the supplement to take. Vitamin D is associated with overall improved health, and can help with diseases as advanced as cancer.

Methionine is an incredibly important amino acid that the body cannot make by itself – it must be consumed. It is converted into samE which is great for joints as well as for anxiety and depression, and is also a key player in the production of glutathione, perhaps the most important detox chemical in the body. Great for detox, liver support, weight loss, mental health, acne, and inflammation.

Source Naturals 5-HTP 120 Capsules

5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin that people often take both for better sleep and mental health as well as for reduced food cravings. It’s seriously powerful for the cravings. Err on the side of a smaller dose to start.

Source Naturals L-Tryptophan, 120 capsules

L-tryptophan is one of my favorite sleep aids. It’s remarkable for boosting serotonin, and is my favorite serotonin booster (even moreso than 5HTP, which in high doses can cause anxiety). Take it no more than an hour before bed. It’s also great for regulating appetite.

Free form L-tyrosine by Source Naturals, 100 tablets

This dopamine precursor is great to take with either 5htp or with tryptophan to help regulate and suppress an over-active appetite.

Red Boat Fish Sauce (AWESOME soy replacement)

Ever heard of Umami, the mysterious and much sought-after fifth flavor so popular in some cuisines?  It’s what makes MSG so addictive… but it’s here, and sooooo healthy instead of sooooo bad, in fish sauce.  Shamazeballs.

Kimchi is definitely my favorite fermented food. If you haven’t had it, it’s fermented Korean cabbage with garlic and chili sauce…
