That goopy, sugary, minty stuff in a tube that you most likely use to brush your teeth could be causing you health problems.
Did you know that most regular toothpastes are filled with artificial sweeteners, chemicals, and even gluten!?
Not to mention that many toothpastes contain known carcinogens like SLS and dangerous chemicals like fluoride.
You may not think you’re swallowing your toothpaste, but trust me, you are! And all that hard work avoiding gluten and chemicals might be going down the drain and into your body.
(Side note: this happens with your drug store lipstick too!)
So how can you brush your teeth in a paleo way?
I’m not one of the paleo people who is going to give you a recipe for a coconut oil toothpaste and call it a day! I recognize that all you lovely readers are busy people who may not have time to make your own toothpastes, deodorants, and all that jazz.
If you do make your own, more power to you!!
But with all the convenient natural health products out there, there is no reason you can’t just buy a great toothpaste that will meet your needs!
There are two natural toothpastes that I recommend which contain ingredients you can be confident about brushing your teeth with.
Nature’s Gate Toothpaste
My favorite is Nature’s Gate Toothpaste. It is fluoride free, contains no artificial sweeteners, and contains no SLS (a known carcinogen common in many toothpastes)
Nature’s Gate is made primarily with baking soda and peppermint oil, two natural and healthy ingredients that are usually the base for homemade toothpastes anyway!
The best part for me is it’s similarity to regular toothpaste. Taste and texture wise, it is a very similar experience and the sense of normalcy is nice.
Find Nature’s Gate on Amazon here.
Dirty Mouth Tooth Powder
If you want a truly paleo option, one of my favorites is the Dirty Mouth Tooth Powder from Primal Life Organics. I always recommend PLO as a company whose products you can truly trust. I use lots of their stuff on a daily basis and talked about some of their skincare in this post.
The Dirty Mouth Tooth Powder is made from only safe, paleo ingredients like earthen clays, baking soda and essential oils.
It’s a little tough to get used to brushing your teeth with a powder, but I promise, it’s worth it!
My teeth always feel lovely and clean and the black peppermint taste is really good!

Do you have a favorite natural toothpaste? Let me know how you get your teeth clean in the comments below!
I like Tea Tree Therapy. Our co-op has several brands and so far that is my favorite. I don’t think I have tried Nature’s Gate though (and they do have that brand).
Oh awesome! Those are the same two products I use!
Is it okay to brush your teeth with just baking soda, or will that be too harsh on your teeth and gums over the long term? You could probably even make a little paste with something like baking soda, a little bit of peppermint oil and a little water – if it wouldn’t hurt your teeth and gums, that is.
Thanks for the product recommendations…however, I don’t brush my teeth at all. I pull oil… which I think is even more ‘paleo’ and definitely more effective than brushing. I started when, despite almost fanatical oral care, I developed severe gum disease three years ago. Oil pulling cleared up the problem in two weeks: my teeth tightened back up, all of the plaque fell off (the dentist no longer has anything to clean), my teeth whitened and, as a onus, my life-long sinus problem cleared up never to return. I have never looked back. I encourage everyone to try it!
BTW, Stephani, when I get your notices, the link in them NEVER takes me to the post you are currently discussing in the mailing. I have to go hunting for it. Today the link took me to a meatball recipe. As good as it looked, I would prefer to get to the post I’m expecting.
THANKS for a you do!
Sorry… THANKS for ALL you do!
(I hate typos and not being able to fix them)
Good to know about the meatballs… that is so strange. I’ll look into it, thank you, and thanks for the great tip on the oil pulling!! Shall definitely have to experiment
I started using Essential Oxygen Brushing Rinse. My teeth feel like I’ve just had a cleaning and my breath is fresh! Great product.
Hi Stefani,
I use a product called Good Gums. Its a powder and tastes like cinnamon. Check it out. You do not want a paste that has glycerin in it. Apparently, the glycerin coats the teeth and prevents the minerals from penetrating. Just a thought. Thank you for your wonderful website.

Love this post!
I’ve been making my own claypaste for years now =) Here’s my simple yet effective (and awesome) recipe!
CLAYPASTE
Ingredients
1/4 cup food grade bentonite clay powder
3/8 cup boiling water
1/4 tsp unrefined sea salt
15 – 25 drops of organic stevia
10-12 drops peppermint or spearmint essential oil
4-6 drops tea tree essential oil
Directions
Dump the powdered clay in a bowl, then add sea salt.
Pour in the boiling water.
Using a non-metallic spoon or fork, (I use a wooden spoon) start mixing the clay until it is well blended with the water. Add stevia, and both the peppermint and tea tree essential oils. Mix it all well and store in any container except metal.
